Manitoba Hal Workshop

Manitoba Hal Workshop

Manitoba Hal Workshop

You can't play blues on a ukulele! Who ever heard of using this diminutive guitar for anything other than novelty music or Hawaiian music? Well Manitoba Hal says you can and he wants to show you how. “There are many blues performers like Edgar Winter and Otis Taylor who began on the ukulele before migrating to guitar and I believe the instrument certainly can carry the weight of the blues. People often think of the ukulele as a happy instrument and they're not wrong, but it is also capable of delivering the mojo that makes the blues so interesting” says Hal.

This workshop covers topics such as the twelve bar blues and sixteen bar blues, shuffle strumming, solo playing and performance skills. Participants will be led through a basic blues song from simply playing the song to “pimping it out” with licks and other tricks of the blues. Arranged for C6 tuned ukulele (G C E A).

Ken Middleton Workshop

Ken Middleton workshopIn this 90 minute workshop Ken will examine several different ways of playing bluegrass music on a ukulele. This will include finger-style, strumming and flat-picking (without a pick). Many of the main techniques used in bluegrass playing like hammer-ons, pull-offs, bends and slides will be carefully demonstrated and you will all be using them in no time.

Ken will also be looking at the similarities between the skills needed for performing bluegrass and Celtic music e.g. playing using campanella voicing. You will get the chance to develop new skills through playing actual pieces of music that Ken has specially arranged for this workshop. If time permits, there may be opportunity to perform a four-part piece together as a group. For this class, participants will need to have an understanding of how to read either tab or conventional notation. Please bring along a ukulele (soprano, concert, or tenor) with standard re-entrant (high G) tuning. It will be fun, but challenging.
